Attacking and defending use the "Combat Dice" to determine if a hit is taken or blocked.

An attack occurs when a Hero and a monster move adjacent to each other, although some weapons allow Heroes to attack diagonally or from a distance. A Hero or monster may only attack once per turn. A Hero may only attack with one weapon at a time.

A monster or Hero defends itself from an attack, but it is considered dead when its Body Points reach zero.

On HeroQuest Interactive, Attack has several tables to determine how many dice to roll when attacking and/or defending.

Combat Dice[]

The Combat Dice are 6-sided dice with pictographs on the sides instead of numbers. Each die has 3 skulls, 2 white shields and 1 black shield on its sides.

Name Image Result
Attacking Defending
Hero Monster Hero Monster
Skull Dice skull A hit A hit
White Shield Dice white shield A block
Black Shield Dice black shield A block

Hero attacking and Monster defending[]

As a Hero, you must roll the combat dice to attack. The quantity of dice to roll depends on the weapon you are using. Failure to roll any skulls results in a failed attack.

Each skull rolled is considered a hit, scored against the monster. If hit, the monster immediately defends by rolling its Defend Dice. If the monster's Body Points reach zero, the monster is considered dead and is removed from the map.

A defending monster rolls the number of Defend Dice shown on the monster's card. Each black shield rolled by the defending monster blocks 1 hit from the attacking Hero.

Monster attacking and Hero defending[]

An attacking monster rolls the number of Attack Dice shown on his Monster Card. Failure to roll any skulls results in a failed attack.

Each skull rolled is considered a hit, resulting in 1 Body Point of damage scored against the Hero. If hit, the Hero immediately defends by rolling its Defend Dice. If the Hero's Body Points reach zero, the Hero is considered dead.

A defending Hero usually rolls 2 Defend Dice.[1] Each white shield rolled by the defending Hero blocks 1 hit from the attacking monster.

Notes[]

  1. Heroes roll less Defend Dice if in a pit or under certain spells, and more after purchasing armor
